Decide whether to drive before you decide where to go

A typhoon or a heavy-rain forecast can change a rental-car day quickly. The safest plan is not to treat your booking, hotel reservation, or navigation estimate as a reason to leave. Instead, make a fresh decision before departure and again whenever conditions change. Start with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) weather warnings. JMA explains that an advisory is issued when heavy rain or strong wind may cause damage, while a warning signals that a serious disaster may occur. An emergency warning indicates the strong possibility of a devastating event. These labels are not a driving-permission scale: local evacuation instructions and safety information take priority over sightseeing plans.

For a visitor, the practical question is simple: can this journey still be made without putting people, the car, or emergency responders at unnecessary risk? If the answer is uncertain, postpone, stay where you are, or choose another safe arrangement. Do not wait for a favorite attraction to close before reassessing. Conditions can differ sharply between the city where you collected the car, a mountain road, and a coastal destination.

Check weather risk and road status separately

Weather information tells you about a hazard; it does not confirm that a particular road is passable. Use JMA’s typhoon information, warnings, and risk maps to understand the expected rain, wind, and local risk. Then check the route itself. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) disaster portal links to the Japan Road Traffic Information Center, passable-road maps, and road-weather or traffic-control information. For expressways, Drive Traffic displays real-time closures and restrictions. A clear-looking navigation route is not evidence that a road remains open.

Make the two checks just before leaving, not only the night before. Repeat them after a long stop, after a warning update, or before you enter an expressway. Save your accommodation address and the rental company’s contact details offline. If mobile service becomes unreliable, you should still know where you are trying to return to or stay safely.

  • Weather: Check the latest JMA warning or advisory for every area on your route, not only the destination.
  • Roads: Confirm closures, traffic controls, and passable-road information through official traffic sources.
  • Local guidance: Follow instructions from municipalities, police, accommodation staff, and road operators.
  • Rental plan: Keep enough time and fuel for a detour, a return journey, or an unplanned overnight stay.

Know when the sensible choice is not to continue

Do not drive into a road covered by water, around a closure, or onto a route that officials say is restricted. Do not assume that a vehicle ahead has proved the road safe. In strong wind, rain, poor visibility, or rapidly changing conditions, reduce speed early, leave a much larger following distance, keep both hands on the wheel, and avoid abrupt braking or steering. If driving no longer feels controlled, move to a safe, permitted place to stop and reassess; do not stop on an expressway except in an emergency.

Never make a U-turn or reverse on an expressway. If you miss an exit because a diversion is confusing, continue to the next safe exit and seek updated information. Your first task is to remain predictable to other drivers. Your second task is to find a lawful, safe place to change the plan. Weather can disrupt flights, trains, ferries, and roads at the same time, so a slower decision is often better than a hurried attempt to keep the original itinerary.

Build a flexible day, not a rigid itinerary

Before setting out, tell everyone in the car what will trigger a change of plan: an official warning, a road closure, worsening visibility, an evacuation instruction, or driver fatigue. Give each planned leg a safe fallback such as returning to your accommodation, remaining at a service area only when it is safe and permitted, or contacting the rental company for assistance. Japan National Tourism Organization’s Safety Tips page links travelers to the latest JMA warnings and practical disaster information.

A rental car is useful because it gives you options; it does not remove weather risk. Check official information, separate forecast from road status, and be ready to delay or cancel a drive. That approach protects your trip and gives you the best chance of enjoying the road when conditions are genuinely safe again.

Make the child-seat plan before you collect the car

A family road trip in Japan can be wonderfully flexible, but the safety plan needs to be settled before the key is handed over. If you are travelling with a child, add the child seat to the same checklist as your licence, passport and route. Tell the rental company the child’s age, height and approximate weight when you book, then ask what type of restraint is available and whether you are expected to fit it yourself. Bring any special positioning needs to the counter early rather than trying to solve them beside a busy car park.

This is a safety check, not simply an optional extra. Japan’s Road Traffic Act requires a driver not to carry a child under six unless the child is using an appropriate child restraint, subject to limited legal exceptions. The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) also reminds drivers that every vehicle occupant must use a seat belt, while children younger than six must be secured in a child seat. Read JAF’s English traffic-rule guidance.

Separate the legal minimum from a good fit

Age is only the first checkpoint. A child who has reached six may still be too small for an adult seat belt to sit correctly. JAF recommends continuing to use a child or junior seat as needed until the child is about 150 cm tall, while stressing that the belt’s position matters more than a birthday. The shoulder belt should lie across the shoulder rather than the neck, and the lap portion should rest over the hips rather than the soft abdomen. If that fit is not possible, use a suitable restraint instead of improvising with the adult belt alone.

Choose the seat according to the child and the equipment label, not according to a familiar name from home. A baby seat, child seat and junior/booster seat serve different stages. Ask the staff to show you the seat’s instruction label and the vehicle points it is designed to use. If the vehicle has ISOFIX anchors, do not assume every supplied seat uses them; follow the seat and vehicle instructions that apply to the actual combination in front of you.

Use a five-minute handover check

Before leaving the rental location, park somewhere calm and check the seat with the child seated in it. Japan’s National Police Agency reports that, in its 2025 survey with JAF, correct installation and correct seating were not universal. That is a useful reminder to check the details instead of relying on a quick glance. See the National Police Agency’s child-seat guidance.

  • Confirm the restraint type. Check that its label and instructions suit the child’s current size and that the model is approved for the vehicle position you are using.
  • Read the belt route. If the seat is secured with the vehicle belt, make sure the belt follows the marked path and is not twisted. If it uses ISOFIX, confirm each connector is properly engaged as instructed.
  • Check the seat’s stability. Apply firm pressure near the belt path and follow the manual’s test; if anything feels loose or unclear, ask for help before departure.
  • Position the child. Fasten the harness or belt flat against the body, with no bulky clothing or loose objects under it. Use only the adjustments permitted by the seat instructions.
  • Check the adult belt too. Every adult passenger should buckle up before the car moves, including those seated in the rear.

Keep the routine on the road

Repeat a brief check after a long break, after moving the seat, or whenever another adult has helped the child in or out. Do not alter the belt path to make a child seem more comfortable, and do not place luggage where it can press against the seat or harness. Build extra time into short stops so that no one is tempted to rush the fastening process.

Finally, make the plan portable. Keep the seat manual, the rental paperwork and the child’s essentials together, and ask the rental company how the seat should be returned. A calm handover, an age-aware choice and a careful final check let your family focus on the drive rather than an avoidable safety question.

Official references

For the legal requirement and current safety information, consult the National Police Agency and JAF’s child-seat guide. These sources should take priority over general travel advice when selecting and fitting a restraint.

Make Michi-no-Eki part of your driving plan

A long self-drive day in Japan is more enjoyable when your breaks are planned before fatigue, hunger, or a navigation mistake forces one. Michi-no-Eki, often translated as roadside stations, are government-designated stops on ordinary roads. They are not simply fuel stations or highway service areas. Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism describes them as places to rest, obtain information, and connect with the local area. For a rental-car traveler, that makes them useful anchors between sights, towns, and accommodation.

These stops are found throughout Japan, from Okinawa to Hokkaido, so they can fit many kinds of itineraries. Their shared basics are reassuring: free parking and toilets are available around the clock. The shops, cafés, produce markets, activity counters, and other extras are different at every location, so treat them as a welcome possibility rather than a promise. Check the individual station’s latest official information before relying on a meal, shopping stop, or particular service.

Plan stops around driving energy, not only attractions

When you map a day, choose one or two Michi-no-Eki that sit naturally along your route. Mark them as flexible rest points, not deadlines. This is especially helpful on rural roads where the next town may be farther away than it appears on a map, and on routes with scenic pull-offs that can make a day run late. A short stop can be enough to use the restroom, drink water, reset the navigation, and agree on the next turn before getting back into traffic.

Do not wait until you are struggling to focus. If the driver feels sleepy, distracted, or rushed, pull in when it is safe and take a proper break. A roadside station is designed to support road users, but it is not a substitute for sensible trip planning. Build enough time into the day, share driving when your rental agreement and licences allow it, and avoid making a tight arrival time the reason to keep driving when you need rest.

Use the stop well

On arrival, park only in a marked space and watch for pedestrians, delivery vehicles, and cars reversing. Before you leave the vehicle, take a minute to review the next section of the route. Local information counters can be useful for nearby attractions, road conditions, and directions, while many stations also introduce regional food and products. That local focus is part of the appeal: a break can add context to your journey instead of merely interrupting it.

  • Confirm the next destination: enter it while parked, and check whether the route uses ordinary roads or expressways.
  • Check the clock: compare your estimated arrival time with daylight, hotel check-in, and any booking you hold.
  • Keep the break simple: water, restroom, a light snack, and a short walk can be more valuable than trying to see everything.
  • Respect the facility: follow posted signs, use bins correctly, and do not assume every shop, restaurant, or counter is open at the same hours as the parking area.

Choose local experiences without losing track of the road

Michi-no-Eki can turn an ordinary transfer day into a small local discovery. You may find seasonal produce, regional crafts, or information about a lesser-known viewpoint nearby. If something interests you, decide whether it fits the day’s remaining driving time before changing the plan. Avoid pulling over on the roadside to search on your phone; use the station’s safe parking area instead. If you add a detour, update the navigation, check the new arrival time, and make sure the driver is still fresh enough for it.

It is also wise to distinguish a roadside station from an overnight accommodation plan. The common facilities make them convenient for a daytime break, but policies and available services vary by location. For overnight arrangements, use accommodation or designated facilities that clearly permit your intended stay, and always follow posted rules.

A calmer way to cover more ground

The best rental-car itinerary leaves room to pause. By identifying Michi-no-Eki before you set off, you gain safe places to regroup, refresh, and learn about the region without relying on an unplanned roadside stop. Use the official MLIT guidance and the JNTO overview as a starting point, then confirm the current details for each station on your route. With breaks planned early and expectations kept flexible, you can arrive more relaxed and enjoy the road in between.

Picking up a rental car is exciting, but the first few minutes can shape the rest of your road trip. Before you leave the rental location, pause for a short, methodical check. It helps you document the car’s condition, understand the controls, and start calmly rather than learning essential functions in traffic. This checklist is designed for visitors driving in Japan for the first time or returning after a long flight.

1. Confirm the agreement before the keys leave the counter

Read the pickup details while staff are available to answer questions. Confirm the named driver, return location and time, fuel-return requirement, included equipment, and the contact method shown in your rental documents. If a term is unclear, ask for an explanation before departing. Keep the agreement and emergency contact details where the driver can reach them without searching through luggage.

2. Walk around the car with a staff member

Japan National Tourism Organization recommends checking scratches and dents with staff before driving away. Walk slowly around the vehicle and look at the bumpers, wheels, mirrors, windscreen, roofline, and door edges. Make sure pre-existing marks are recorded according to the company’s process. If the rental company permits photos, take clear, time-stamped images of any existing damage and the vehicle’s general condition. The goal is not to find fault; it is to ensure that you and the company share the same starting record.

3. Set up your driving position while parked

Adjust the seat, steering wheel if adjustable, and all mirrors before moving. Toyota Rent a Car likewise advises renters to adjust the seat and mirrors before departure. Fasten the driver’s seatbelt and confirm that every passenger is buckled in. In Japan, JAF states that drivers and all passengers must wear seatbelts. A few seconds spent here can reduce distractions at the first junction, where an unfamiliar vehicle and left-side traffic may demand your full attention.

4. Learn the essential controls without moving

Ask the staff to point out the gear selector, parking brake, fuel-door release, hazard lights, headlight switch, windscreen wipers, demister, and navigation controls. Check which fuel type the vehicle requires, but do not guess from vehicle size or appearance. If the navigation system is unfamiliar, enter the first destination while parked and ask how to change language settings if they are available. JAF cautions that drivers must not use a mobile phone or be distracted by car navigation while driving, so finish this setup before you join the road.

5. Prepare the first ten minutes of the route

Choose a simple first destination, such as your accommodation, a nearby service area, or a safe place to stop and review the route. Check the planned exit from the rental location, especially if it joins a busy road. Put the phone away after setting navigation, and let a passenger handle route changes when possible. If you need to adjust anything, stop legally and safely first; do not try to solve a navigation problem while rolling.

6. Make one final outside-and-inside check

  • Look around the vehicle for pedestrians, bicycles, bollards, and low obstacles.
  • Confirm doors, boot, and fuel flap are closed, and loose luggage is secure.
  • Check mirrors again and locate the hazard-light button.
  • Keep your rental documents and the company’s contact details accessible.

Then move off slowly and give yourself time to settle into the vehicle. This short routine does not replace the rental agreement or local rules, but it makes the first drive more predictable. For additional official guidance, see JNTO’s rental-car advice, Toyota Rent a Car’s pickup guide, and JAF’s driving rules.
