A missed exit is not a reason to stop

Japanese expressways are built for steady, one-way traffic. When a navigation instruction comes late, the road branches quickly, or you simply notice your exit too late, it can feel tempting to slow sharply or look for a way back. Do neither. NEXCO, the expressway operator, is clear: never make a U-turn or reverse on the main line or near a tollgate. The safest first decision is simple: keep travelling in the correct direction and take the next interchange.

This is especially important in a rental car, where an unfamiliar right-hand-drive vehicle, left-side traffic and a new navigation system can add pressure. Missing an exit costs time; trying to correct it on the road can create a serious danger. Treat the next interchange as part of the route, not as a failure.

The five-step response

• Stay calm and continue forward. Keep a safe speed, remain in your lane and follow the signs for the next interchange.
• Do not turn around or back up. This applies on the expressway and around toll plazas. A shoulder or a wide-looking area is not a place to correct the mistake.
• Exit at the next interchange. Do not stop on the main line to reset the route.
• Use a staffed general lane. At the exit, go to a general lane and speak to the tollhouse staff before paying.
• Follow the staff member’s instruction. They can explain the safe next step for that interchange and traffic situation.

What ETC users should do

If your rental car is using an ETC card and you have passed the intended exit, NEXCO advises removing the ETC card from the in-vehicle unit before entering a general lane or an ETC/general lane at the next exit. Tell the staff member that you missed your intended interchange before payment is processed. Do not try to solve the toll issue by making an unscheduled turn at the plaza or by reversing toward another lane.

The staff may be able to guide you back toward the intended interchange. That assistance depends on the layout of the interchange, so it is not something to assume in advance. If returning is not possible or you choose to leave elsewhere, the applicable toll is based on the section you actually use. Listen to the on-site instruction rather than relying on a general online tip.

Set the navigation only after you are safely off the main line

Once you have exited and received instructions, park only where parking is permitted, such as a suitable parking space, before checking the map or changing the destination. If another person is travelling with you, ask them to check the navigation while you keep your attention on driving. A missed exit is a useful reminder to review the next interchange well before reaching it, especially where several exits or ramps appear close together.

Before a long drive, enter the destination, confirm the planned exit name and allow extra time for a wrong turn, congestion or a rest break. Extra care at service and parking areas

The same direction-of-travel rule matters when leaving a service area (SA) or parking area (PA). Follow the exit arrows carefully when rejoining the expressway. Never use internal roads or parking aisles as a shortcut to return toward an entrance you have missed. If you are unsure where the exit leads, stop only in a legal parking place and ask staff or consult the map before moving again.

A calmer way to plan a rental-car day

Build a small time buffer into every intercity itinerary. That buffer makes it easier to continue safely when you miss an exit instead of reacting impulsively. Keep your rental company’s contact details with your documents, know whether the car has an ETC card, and agree with your passengers that the driver does not handle a phone while the vehicle is moving. On Japan’s expressways, the safe recovery is always the same: continue forward, exit at the next interchange, and ask the tollhouse staff for guidance.
