Sankeien Garden by Rental Car: Parking and a Relaxed Yokohama Walk
A garden visit, not a drive through the garden
Sankeien Garden is in Yokohama’s Honmoku area, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Its ponds and historic buildings offer a quieter change of pace during a rental-car trip. The practical approach is simple: drive to the designated parking area, leave the car there, and explore on foot. This is a Yokohama outing, not a Hokkaido route, and it does not require squeezing several distant attractions into one day.
Choose a manageable visit rather than a tightly timed sightseeing circuit. Before collecting the car, check the garden’s latest notices and your rental return deadline. Autumn scenery is a reason to slow down, not a promise of peak foliage on a particular October date. Yokohama’s official tourism information describes the changing leaves as a late-autumn attraction; conditions vary from year to year.
Set the correct destination and check your exit
The official address is 58-1 Honmoku Sannotani, Naka-ku, Yokohama. Set your navigation for the garden’s main-gate parking entrance, then compare the approach with the official access map. A place name alone is not enough to establish that an expressway exit works from your direction of travel.
The garden specifically warns that Sankeien IC cannot be used to exit from the downbound direction. Its guidance lists Honmoku-futo IC or Shin-yamashita IC for that approach. Check the direction labels on the official map before departure instead of assuming the exit named after the garden is always available. Follow current signs and restrictions, and do not rely on a fixed journey time.
Prepare for parking before you arrive
The parking lot is beside the main entrance, but ordinary passenger-car spaces cannot be reserved. The official website provides parking congestion information. Check it before setting off, while safely stationary, and remember that an available space at that moment is not a guarantee when you arrive.
- The published passenger-car charge is ¥1,000 for up to the first two hours.
- After two hours, the additional charge is ¥200 for each 30 minutes, with no daily maximum.
- Payment is cash only, using ¥1,000 notes and coins. Prepare suitable cash rather than relying on a card or a larger banknote.
Recheck the official information on your travel day and follow the posted conditions. During foliage season and events, the garden recommends considering public transport because the lot may fill. If parking is unavailable, do not wait across entrances or stop on the road for photographs. Change the plan instead of treating a full lot as permission to park elsewhere without checking.
Leave time to walk and enjoy the grounds
Normal opening hours are 9:00–17:00, with final admission at 16:30. Events or unexpected conditions can change those hours, and the regular closure is December 26–31. Arriving at the last admission time is not the same as having enough time for a relaxed visit, so work backward from closing and your return journey.
Once parked, record where you left the car and walk at a pace that suits your group. Comfortable shoes and a light rain layer are sensible preparations. Keep children close beside the pond, respect barriers, and pause for photographs where you will not block other visitors. The garden is a place for walking; the rental car stays outside the visitor paths.
Finish without rushing the rental return
Before leaving, check traffic and allow a buffer for refueling and returning the car. Make navigation changes only after stopping somewhere safe and legal. If weather, crowds or fatigue reduce the available time, shorten the visit rather than speeding up the drive. A successful Sankeien outing is one with clear parking arrangements, an unhurried walk and a comfortable journey back.
