A family rental-car trip in Japan starts before anyone turns the ignition. Alongside luggage space and your driving documents, plan a suitable restraint for every child who needs one. A seat that is available, compatible with the car and appropriate for the child matters more than a quick collection. Arrange it while booking rather than treating it as something to find after arrival.

JAF, the Japan Automobile Federation, explains that Japanese law requires a child restraint for children under six. Do not assume that a short journey removes that requirement. JAF also recommends continued use of an appropriate child seat for children shorter than 150 centimetres. This height recommendation is safety guidance, not a separate legal age limit. Turning six does not automatically mean an adult belt fits safely.

The reason is belt positioning. JAF explains that an adult belt should lie around the middle of the collarbone and across the hip bones. On a smaller child, it can instead cross the neck and soft abdomen. Choose a child restraint or junior seat suited to the child's size and the manufacturer's instructions. Do not select a product simply because its label sounds right for a particular birthday.

Tell the rental provider each child's age, current height and weight, and the number of seats you need. Ask which restraint types are available for your selected vehicle and collection location. Confirm the attachment method, any charge and how the reservation is recorded. These are questions to verify, not promises that every branch stocks the same equipment or includes it free.

Nippon Rent-A-Car's official guidance illustrates why these checks matter: its seat models can vary by location, and the supplied attachment method may differ with reservation conditions. Its rules are specific to that company; do not assume another provider follows identical policies. If bringing your own restraint, confirm suitability for the actual car and follow both the vehicle and restraint manuals.

At pickup, check that the supplied restraint matches the agreed type and the child's size. Read the installation instructions and ask staff to explain anything you cannot follow. Use the correct belt route or approved anchors specified for that combination of seat and vehicle. If the manual calls for another fixing component, do not omit it. Staff assistance is useful, but it does not replace checking the completed installation.

Adjust the harness or belt as the restraint instructions require, without twisting it. Check belt positioning and fit before departure. Keep the manuals accessible so another adult can repeat the check after a stop. If the seat cannot be fitted correctly or its suitability remains uncertain, resolve the issue with the provider before driving. Do not improvise a substitute restraint to keep your itinerary on schedule.

Build in breaks so children can stretch and adults can check the restraint again. If a child needs attention that distracts the driver, stop somewhere safe before helping. A changed seating arrangement or a removed restraint should trigger another installation and fit check. A calm pickup and a flexible itinerary are practical ways to make the safety checks easier, not reasons to relax them.

Before leaving, confirm three things: the right seat was reserved, it fits the child and car, and it is correctly installed and adjusted. Keep the legal under-six rule separate from JAF's height-based recommendation. Your family's actual equipment and fit should guide the final departure decision.
